Abstract. – In the two dossiers presented here, that of the Stertinii of the southern Iberian peninsula and that of the Ocratii of Volubilis, the confrontation of lapidary epigraphy and that of the Dressel 20 amphorae can shed light on the promotion processes and the trajectory of certain families over a long period. Based on the notion of generation and on a chronology, the analysis shows how, in the case of the Stertinii, investments in the production of amphorae made in the first third of the 1st century by business managers, – freed slaves or their descendants – of a prominent Senate family, allowed to anchor the former in Baetica and their gradual rise in the social hierarchy. The Ocratii file also shows that in the 2nd century, for an ambitious family from the neighbouring Tingitania that reached the top of the local notability, investments in the marketing of Betica oil, can partly help to reach the senatorial census.
