Abstract. – This paper presents an analysis of Caligula’s african policy regarding the annexation of Mauretania. The author shows the coherence of emperor’s decisions and he proposes that the transfert of the command of legio III Augusta to an imperial legate was not addressed to limit the power of the proconsul but it was a part of the strategy for the annexation of Mauretania. He proposes the hypothesis that C. Suetonius Paulinus and Cn. Hosidius Geta were not governors of Mauretania during the war but the first imperial legates of the legio III under Claudius.
