Résumé. – Dans sa Géographie, Strabon, entre autres choses, dresse un tableau des différentes ressources de l’oikouménè. Le bois est l’une d’entre elles, mais le vocabulaire qu’emploie Strabon va bien au-delà de la seule ressource ligneuse. L’article étudie ce vocabulaire relatif au bois à l’échelle de toute la Géographie (répartition des termes entre les différents livres et typologie des champs lexicaux) et, à travers quelques études de cas, cherche à préciser le sens des termes génériques les plus fréquents (δρυμός, ὕλη, ἄλσος, ξύλον) que Strabon utilise dans trois contextes, différents mais non exclusifs : le bois comme marqueur d’un territoire et d’un paysage, le bois comme ressource, et le bois comme thauma.
Abstract. – In his Geography, among other things, Strabo gives an overview of the various resources available in the oikouménè. Wood is one of them, but the vocabulary used by Strabo goes far beyond the scope of wood resources. The article explores the vocabulary associated with wood across the whole of Geography (distribution of terms between the different books and lexical fields typology) and through a few case studies, seeks to clarify the meaning of the most frequent generic terms (δρυμός, ὕλη, ἄλσος, ξύλον) used by Strabo in three different but not exclusive contexts: wood as a marker of territory and landscape, wood as a resource, and wood as thauma.
