Abstract. – Following the work of Y. Garlan, studies of warfare in Greece in the classical period have treated poliorcetic operations as a marginal fighting experiences, reflecting a poorly developed technique in this area. The aim of this contribution is to propose a synthesis on Greek poliorcetics in the 5th century, based on the text of Thucydides. It calls into question the negative observations expressed by Y. Garlan: the frequency of these operations and the special arrangements they required show on the contrary that Greek poliorcetics in the 5th century B.C. had reached a significant degree of sophistication and that this kind of operation was a common feature of warfare throughout the Classical Period.
