Abstract. – A recent internet posting concerning a new aureus of Hadrian bearing the words HADRIANO TRAIAN-O CAESARI on the back confirms the fact that this type of coin was minted in Rome or Antiochus either before Trajan’s death or after the Prince’s death and before the news was made public. In fact the coin is authentic but it renders official a bogus historical event which is Hadrian’s adoption by Trajan. This was indeed Plotinus’s wish but it was never implemented – antique literary sources testify to this – however the minting of the coin put a stop to gossip which was rife and ensured a smooth take-over of the empire for Hadrian.
