Résumé. – Les associations phéniciennes de négociants à Délos sont bien connues par un petit corpus épigraphique et en particulier deux longs décrets des Poséidoniastes de Bérytos et des Hérakléistes de Tyr. Dans ces textes en grec, les associations sont désignées par une large terminologie, κοινὸν, σύνοδος et θίασος. Philologues et historiens ont essayé sans succès de comprendre les réalités que traduit chacun de ces trois termes. Après un bilan historiographique, je propose un nouveau sens pour σύνοδος, celui de l’entité juridique et institutionnelle de l’organisation, remettant en perspective les autres termes. Cela permet de réinterpréter certains passages complexes des décrets.
Abstract. – The Phoenician merchants’ associations of Delos are known from a small corpus of inscriptions and, in particular, from two long decrees of the Poseidoniasts of Berytos and the Herakleists of Tyre. In these Greek texts, the associations are referred to by a range of different terms: κοινὸν, σύνοδος and θίασος. Philologists and historians have tried in vain to understand the realities that lay behind each of these three terms. After a review of the historiography on the question, I propose a new meaning for σύνοδος, that relates to the legal and institutional entity of the organisation, which in turn provides a clearer perspective on the other terms. This new understanding of the term σύνοδος makes it possible to reinterpret certain complex passages in the decrees.
