Résumé. – Cet article identifie les principaux aspects de la royauté hellénistique sous les Lagides au premier siècle avant J.-C. et montre comment la royauté au temps de Cléopâtre VII empruntait encore des éléments centraux de la politique et de l’idéologie d’Alexandre et des premiers rois hellénistiques, en particulier leurs ambitions impérialistes. Cléopâtre a su réinventer l’impérialisme dans un contexte où désormais la victoire militaire est moins importante que la succession héréditaire pour légitimer la royauté, et où les femmes de la famille royale ont déjà commencé à jouer un rôle politique plus marquant. Les ambitions impériales de Cléopâtre pouvaient donc être renforcées par son ascendance, notamment en invoquant ses ancêtres lagides et séleucides, et par la délégation d’une grande partie des tâches militaires aux Romains. La nature de la royauté est aussi examinée telle qu’elle apparaît dans le récit de Flavius Josèphe à propos de la relation entre Cléopâtre VII et Alexandra, dernière reine hasmonéenne et belle-mère d’Hérode.
Abstract. – This study identifies the main aspects of Hellenistic kingship under the Ptolemies in the first century BC and argues that kingship under Cleopatra VII still engaged significantly with the policies and ideologies of Alexander and the early Hellenistic kings, in particular with their imperialist ambitions. Cleopatra was able to reinvent imperialism because military victory had become less important than hereditary succession to legitimize kingship, and because royal women had already started playing a more striking political role. Cleopatra’s imperial ambitions could, therefore, be strengthened by her lineage, specifically by emphasizing her double Ptolemaic and Seleucid ancestry, and by delegating a significant portion of the military tasks to the Romans. The nature of kingship is also examined through Josephus’ account of the interaction of Cleopatra VII with Alexandra, the last Hasmonean queen and Herod’s mother-in-law.
