Résumé. – Cet article aborde le mythe de la nef Argô dans ses différents aspects à partir d’une analyse exhaustive des traitements poétiques et des sources mythographiques grecques et latines. On étudie, en effet, la construction et le nom d’Argô ; la caractérisation et la qualité magique de ce navire parlant ; la considération problématique d’Argô comme pentécontère ; le périple argonautique et son épisode plus significatif (le franchissement des Symplégades) ; et finalement, le thème littéraire d’Argô comme le premier navire, archétype de la navigation et symbole de la domination de la mer par l’homme.
Abstract. – This article discusses the myth of the ship Argo in its different guises, starting from a comprehensive analysis of Greco-Latin poetic treatments and mythographic sources. We thus study the construction and the name Argo; the characterization and magical quality of this speaking ship; the controversial fact that Argo is regarded as a penteconter; the Argonautic journey and its most notorious difficulty (the path of the Symplegades); and finally, the literary theme of the Argo as the first ship, the archetypal symbol of navigation and control of the sea by men.
