Résumé. – Métropolis, petite ville d’Ionie tournée vers l’hinterland rural, est attractive pour la population de la vallée fertile du Kaystros, grâce à sa position stratégique. Pour préserver son identité spécifique, elle a choisi comme dieu tutélaire Arès, d’origine indigène. Depuis 2004, le matériel épigraphique a énormément augmenté, particulièrement en ce qui concerne les listes du personnel du culte civique pour Arès. Elles montrent l’organisation du culte et la manière dont les familles aisées essayaient de gagner ou de préserver leur position privilégiée.
Abstract. – The small Ionian town of Metropolis turned towards the rural hinterland attracted the population of the fertile Kaystros valley because of its strategic postion. In order to preserve its specific identity, the town chose the indigenous Ares, as its tutelary god. Since 2004, epigraphic material has been greatly added to and more particularly relating to the list of staff members linked with the civic cult for Ares. They show the organisation of the cult and the manner in which well to do families endeavoured to earn or to preserve their privileged position.
