Abstract. – All elements for establishing the chronology of the year 238, between the African revolt and the advent of Gordian III, are reconsidered: the duration of the reigns; the contribution of Egyptian documents, which must be considered reliable; the mint in Rome and Alexandria; the imperial constitutions; the date of the Kapetôlia, during which the murder of Pupienus and Balbinus took place; the inscriptions dating from the first half of 238, in particular the inscription of Virunum CIL ΙΙΙ 4820, which now provides a more robust marker for the advent of Gordian III. All data are in contradiction with the high chronology. This chronology derives from the inscription from Shaqqā in honour of Gordian; actually it was initially engraved in honour of Maximinus and amended twice, the last to honour Philippus Arabs. The most likely time for the dies imperii of Gordian is that of the Apollinarian games, between 6 and 13 July; we can again defend as possible day July 9.
