Abstract. – Our investigation is concerned with the evolution of the attitude of latin poets towards the Carthaginians. This attitude was determined as much by historical circumstances as by the future of latin epic. It can be hostile and even simplistic for Naevius and Ennius, more complex and nuanced for Virgil or full of rehetoric for Silius Italicus but the latin authors’ discourse also acquired mythical and symbolical connotations. We have also tried to observe the way the Romans saw themselves through the image they had of their ennemies.
